As a mom, you want your children to learn all the necessary life skills that they will require, from a young age. How to live a life that honors God, love themselves and others, behave respectfully, and live independently.
One way to ensure our children are developing these skills is through homeschooling. Homeschooling gives moms the ability to take on the role of instructor, teaching our children the skills we deem as necessary and vital for their growth and development.
Yet, homeschooling and working aren’t easy to balance. Here are five tips to help working moms balance homeschool and work.
1. Be Organized
Trying to keep your home as organized as possible will help you to establish a good routine but also mean you have less to do in the evenings, after working a busy day too. Being organized can also help you prepare the necessary tools and resources that you need when you want to do a bit of homeschooling with your children.
2. Choose a Curriculum that Works for You
There are so many options for curriculums when it comes to homeschooling. There are some that come in a kit, with workbooks for each subject. There are some that are online and break down each day and each lesson. One great way to find a curriculum that meets your needs is to join homeschool groups on Facebook and asks other working moms what curriculums they prefer. We’ve heard great things about The Good and the Beautiful, Abeka, and All in One Homeschool.
3. Divide Your Schedule
If you are working or running a business as well as trying to teach your children there is a lot to take in. It will be best to try and divide your work schedule, such as the day-to-day running of your business from the time you will spend teaching your child a new subject matter. Some working moms use evenings and weekends to homeschool to separate work from home life and homeschooling. Remember homeschool can be done anytime and anywhere.
4. Use Positive, Encouraging Language
Providing your children with a growth mindset display is a good way to boost their overall confidence and ability to learn from their mistakes when learning. Depending on the personality of your child, some can experience a lack of confidence when they get answers to questions wrong, which is completely normal to be able to learn efficiently. But encouraging them with positive dialogue and language will help build their self-esteem along the way too.
5. Provide Interactive, Fun Games
Just because you want to teach your kids a new topic area doesn’t mean it needs to be boring. Really you want interactive material that you can engage with them and they will find interesting. You can use online material for inspiration so that you are introducing information that will be easier to retain. It is not going to be very inspiring for a young child to have to read a long, boring text compared to answering a fun quiz with bright visuals or using their creativity when learning a new fact. So mix things up a bit to see what your child likes best.
Working and homeschooling is possible. Find a time that works best for you and choose a curriculum that both meets your needs as a teacher and meets the needs of your child.
