Family Fourth of July Traditions

fourth of july

The Fourth of July is one of the most celebrated American holidays. Not only is it a time to celebrate the freedom of the nation, but it’s also a way for family and friends to connect with one another. Time off from work can mean barbecues, camping trips, time at the beach or fireworks for many families during this holiday.  For myself and my family, this holiday means the annual family reunion is upon us.

Every Fourth of July, or corresponding weekend, we have an all-family Westergard reunion.  This has been a family event since the mid 1980’s.  The celebration takes place at my grandparent’s residence in Minnesota.  My Grandparent’s home is located in a rural area near a state park so it is beautifully green, lush and full of hills and trees.

The reunion is an all-day event filled with games, reminiscing, laughter, and of course, a whole lot of food.  Everyone brings a dish or two; we eat lunch and then basically graze the rest of the day as we please.

Games are always a popular activity at our reunions.  Corn Hole, ladder ball, Kubb and horseshoes are only some of the games we play throughout the day.  Those who aren’t engaged in playing games or participating in the other various activities, are relaxing, catching up with one another and reminiscing by browsing old photo and videos.

It is heart warming to experience the traditions that I have participated in since my youth, but now I also get to see my own children creating new memories and traditions.

I feel very fortunate to have a family that is so close and appreciates spending time with one another. The importance of family is a lesson that we were fortunate to have been blessed with, and it’s one we pass on to our children.  As people grow older and things begin to change, I hope this event is something that will be a family Fourth of July tradition for many years and generations to come.

Create Your Own Traditions

The Fourth of July is an opportunity for you to start your own traditional celebration with your family and friends.  If organizing a family reunion seems like a daunting task, just remember to start off small.  Invite only close family and friends so that you won’t overwhelm yourself.  As time goes on and you become more comfortable organizing, expand the invitation list to include the ever-widening circle of family members and friends in your life.

If bbq and reunion planning is not your thing, look into having the family attend some of the many events that are sure to be happening in your area.  There are always parades, races, fireworks displays, and festivals happening which are put on by your city and/or state.  These events are a great way to have a fun and memorable time while bonding with those you care about.

The important thing to remember about traditions for the family is you get to spend time with those you love.  All of our time is usually spent being too busy.  Whether it’s work, school, running a business, taking care of everyone or all of the above, the point of having traditions is to stay connected with each other now and in future.  This holiday gives us the chance to slow down, enjoy being with one another, and making memories that we’ll have for the rest of our lives.

Other Fourth of July Ideas

Need some ideas for starting a Fourth of July tradition with your family? Here are a few:

  • BBQ at the park – Have family members bring a dish, get the best cook on the grill and have plenty of games for children
  • Family movie – There is usually an animated film released around the 4th, make it a family movie day!
  • Hit the buffet – Buffets are fun, affordable and all you can eat. Make it a tradition by having the family meet there for breakfast, lunch or dinner on the 4th.
  • Meet up to watch fireworks – Most cities have a fireworks show that starts at sundown. Have the family meet there and create lasting memories!
  • Go to the beach – The beach is always a fun place to go, no matter the occasion. Pack some snacks, sunscreen and sand toys for hours of fun and family time!
  • Family hike – Make getting active a family event! Hike a local mountain or find one that’s not too far away.

What are some traditions you have?  Please share what traditions for the Fourth have made their way into your lives?   We would love to hear from you!
