A question that I am always asked is “How do you do (fill in the blank) while being a mom and wife? If I could get a $1 for all the times that I have been asked this I’d be a pretty wealthy woman. But seriously, anything that I do outside of parenting my children and working on my marriage is always questioned. People really don’t know HOW I do it, and really, it’s because I’m not doing it, it’s the work of God.
2 Corinthians 12:9 says: “But he said to me, my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made in weakness, therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
As busy mom’s, finding time to fellowship with God can be quite challenging, especially when taking care of home, parenting our children, working, finishing school, taking care of our marriages, etc. I mean the list goes on and on. It’s because of this on-going to-do list that it is imperative that we make spending time with God a priority. It’s easy to push our spiritual life to the bottom of the priority list when our daily to-do’s seem out of control.
Have you noticed that when you don’t make the time to spend with God you’re even more stressed out with your days? This happens because we’re attempting to go about our day relying on our own strength and wisdom. This just leaves us entirely burnt-out and overwhelmed. Most of us are busy, and when life seems to stay in go mode, it’s hard to even imagine that time with God is possible. But it is possible and can be achieved. Now, understand that you won’t always get it right in the beginning, but God will be right there to encourage you every step of the way.
Here is a Busy Mom’s Guide to Finding Time with God:
-
Listen to the Bible app/YouTube sermons while getting ready for the day.
This works perfectly for those busier than normal days. You can even listen while driving, that way you are starting your day off with God’s word.
-
Pray while you’re in the shower (I always do this).
Shower time is often times my ONLY alone time as a busy mom and wife. Take advantage of that time and commit your day to God, while also seeking His strength, wisdom, and direction for the day.
-
Pray as a Family
This is a great way to include your children and spouse in on God’s word. This will help you and your family have a better attitude as they all go about their days.
-
Memorize Scripture with your kids.
Memorizing scripture is the BEST way to keep God’s Word in your heart and mind even on the busiest of days. Kids have sharp little memories and are capable of memorizing more than you might think. We had our kids memorize passages, and they did great.
-
Listen to Praise and Worship Music while getting ready and while you’re driving.
Having Godly music playing does so much for your spirit and will help you to feel closer to God.
-
Attempt to wake up an hour earlier than usual
This can be a challenge, as everyone’s day is designed differently, but this too is also possible. My 9-month old wakes up between 6:30am to 7am. I set my alarm at 5:45am every morning. This for me sometimes can be a hit or a miss (more hits than misses) depending on my previous day’s activities. Maybe you can’t wake up that early try 30 minutes. God gives us our hearts desires so if you desire and our genuine about wanting to get your time in with God then with the help of the Holy Spirit you will indeed make the time.
Finding time with God can be a challenge when you’re a mom, but that doesn’t mean that it is impossible. Adjust your expectations, be creative, and commit to it. Keep in mind that spending time with God should not be looked at as a chore but a daily priority. Invite God into your life and know that nothing is too big or too small for him because His Grace is sufficient.
