Beauty and the Brow

Eyebrows

The evolution of the eyebrow has caused quite the stir in the last few years. From plucking and then drawing back in, to being left au natural, we have a choice to be “on fleek” or embrace the uni-brow. My question is, “Isn’t there a happy medium?”

I wake up in the morning and snooze my alarm about four times before my seven year old bounces in, fully dressed, and ready to go.  I have so many to do’s on my list that I begin prioritizing. Coffee. Must make coffee. I throw on my bathrobe, and put my hair up. I have begun my day. My brows are the last thing on my mind.

Between packing lunches and cooking breakfast, I often feel that my beauty comes last. More often than not, I don’t have the time it takes to pluck every stray brow hair and then painstakingly color back in to get the glamorous look. But I don’t want to look like a hot mess either.

A Wax or a Thread

I have tried everything from plucking to waxing, and even threading. If you have never tried this, it would be worth your time. But first let me tell you my experience. If you have a high threshold for pain, go for it. If not, steer clear of the hands flying madly over your face, tearing out multiple hairs at a time. If the process had taken longer than 15 minutes, and I had military secrets, they would have made me sing.

I continually tried removing the eyebrow shrapnel from my face with small puffs of air that I blew out from my lips. As the woman worked the thread furiously with both hands and her mouth, I began to wonder if it was worth it. When she was done however, I had well-groomed brows, and they lasted a long time with low maintenance.

Waxing is much faster, however you cannot get the precision that threading offers. And in my experience, waxing did not keep those stray hairs from growing back as long as threading did. If you are not going for the on fleek look, this works great.

woman tweezing browsTo Tweeze or Not to Tweeze

Tweezing has got to be my least favorite method. It is a slow kind of torture. My husband once asked me to tweeze just one hair from his brow. His dramatic  reaction was priceless. But for a busy working mother, often times it is all I have time for. It is what it is.

Because of this, I usually end up with the happy medium I have been in search of. These brows are not perfect, but neither are they an attempt to imitate Bert from Sesame Street.

There are so many products to choose from that it can be a bit overwhelming and make you feel like, “Well, here goes nothing.” Let’s face it; 10 dollars is 10 dollars. For this reason, Rank and Style has offered the top 10 drugstore brow products from 2017. These are products that are affordable and will help you achieve the look you are going for without breaking the bank.

Balancing a checkbook is much easier than balancing all of the tasks we have as mothers and business professionals. Making time for ourselves is not selfish. Taking a few minutes out of each day to do a little maintenance on our brows creates a well-kept look that can add to credibility in the business world and make us feel just a bit more put together. Especially if we have had a morning ending with Cheerios stuck to our blouse, or worse- we had to skip the shower and do the “messy bun” thing.

Whether you choose threading, waxing, tweezing or skip the hair removal process altogether, a couple minutes on your brows can make a big difference in how you look and feel.

  1. Very true Shannon. Personally, I recommend the threading. Never have my brows looked so nice. I didn’t consider it too painful, especially for the long lasting beautiful results! Thanks for sharing with us.
