5 Simple and Inexpensive Ways to Make Your Home “Fall Cozy”

The fruits of fall are upon us! While for some, fall signals the coming of shorter, colder days. For others, fall is the warmest and coziest time of the year. Wherever you fall on the “fall is my favorite” spectrum, there are many ways to spice up your senses by putting a few cozy and inexpensive touches around your home. Here are five ways to spruce your space and make your home “fall cozy”:

  1. Wonderful whiffs

Lots of us like going to store like HomeGoods and TJMaxx just to take the lids of jar candles and sniff. Not a great baker? That’s okay. Jar candles, sprays and wax melts come in all of your favorite oven-fresh baked good smells like banana nut bread, caramel apple and pumpkin pecan waffles. Not a food smell fan? There are scents that echo freshly laundered pajamas, a cabin in the pines or a crackling fireplace. If you can’t burn candles, try simmering water on a stove and adding sliced apples, cinnamon and cloves for a fresh and simple fragrance.   Here’s a recipe for at-home, stovetop fragrance!

  1. Bountiful Harvest

Fall is a great time to grab inexpensive and abundant produce, not just for eating but decorating! Sure you can go to a craft store to buy foam or wood pumpkins to place in your fall vignette, but fresh is easy and can be bought virtually anywhere! The next time you’re hosting friends for fall meal, grab a bag of fresh shiny apples or small pumpkins from your local farmers market and place in a pretty bowl. Voila! Makes for a cheap and beautiful centerpiece and perhaps a delicious pie later!

  1. Fall in love with flannel

While some states don’t cool down enough in the fall to justify a sweet new pair of flannel sheets on the bed, but if yours does or you just like sleeping on the warmer side of slumber, consider adding a cozy set to keep your tootsies toasty in bed.  Online retailers like Kohl’s offer a variety of styles and sizes that can make any bed feel like a decadent, mountain lodge suite. If your locale is more beach-chill than chilly, try adding a pair of flannel or plaid pillows to your sofa for a splash of color and warmth.

  1. Crockpot Cooking

Crockpot cooking is epitome of cozy cooking! It’s easy, it’s delicious and has the capacity to carry over into leftovers. Whether you like your food country-simple (think hearty chili) or keto-friendly (think cheesy, buffalo cauliflower) you can simplify or sass it up however you’d like! Crockpots tend to have long lives so if you’re looking for an inexpensive crockpot, take a look at your local thrift store. If you want a new crockpot with a few extra bells and whistles, check out the Pioneer Woman line of kitchen gadgets at Walmart. Reasonably priced and can double as a decorative piece just sitting on your counter!

  1. Soothing Sounds

You can tantalize all of your senses this fall when you add calming background noise to whatever activity is at hand. Whether it’s sorting your closet and pulling out those boots and sweaters or you’re crafting a new fall project, a little bit of music can put you in the right mood. Try instrumental music like piano or jazz or perhaps some vintage classics like Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong. The timelessness of the classics can give our minds the opportunity to explore new artists or reconnect with artists of days gone by and it can be a distraction from modern technologies.

I sing a mean "pen karaoke" and I have been known to scrape a birthday cake bald and eat nothing but the frosting. For breakfast. I like auctions and old photos of people I don't know. I'll slap paint on anything that'll sit still long enough. When I can't lose weight, I cut my hair. In my 40's, I found I could grow hair where I didn't even know I had skin. Menopause is weird like that. Back in the day, I had a long-running fitness career. When that ended, my self-esteem deflated like a dollar store balloon and my daily exercise consisted mainly of walking on eggshells, running from my fears and swimming in the depths of regret. But then Jesus. I currently live on a lake in Wisconsin and I enjoy walking, antiquing, live music and all things Italy. I have a BA in English and a MA in Strategic Communications from Regent University.
